Ellen Dahlke is a graduate student in Curriculum and Instruction and a former high school English teacher. She is currently working on her Master’s thesis, looking at high school students’ style practices: How do these students make sense of what others wear and what they perceive as options for them to wear, as that perception is informed both by financial constraints and by notions of race, class, gender, and other locally-constructed categories? How do clothing choices contribute to the composition of a dynamic sense of self? Both with her thesis and with her involvement in the Youth Studies Working Group, Ellen is interested in resisting deficit thinking about high school youth.
